Oral Sedation

One small pill, one deeply relaxed appointment, and — for most patients — almost no memory of the visit at all. Moderate sedation from a certified provider.

Deeper Calm for Bigger Fears

For some patients, "just relax" isn't a helpful instruction — it's the whole problem. When dental fear is severe, when the treatment plan is long, or when past experiences have left real scars, oral moderate sedation offers something nitrous can't: profound, sustained relaxation deep enough that the appointment seems to compress into a hazy few minutes. You're conscious and responsive throughout — but the fear simply can't get traction, and afterwards, most patients remember almost nothing.

How It Works

You'll take a prescribed sedative — timed to our instructions — so it reaches full effect for your appointment. You arrive already calm (this is why your escort drives), settle into the chair, and we verify your comfort before starting. Throughout treatment you're monitored continuously, and the team checks in with you regularly; you can always respond, even if later you don't recall doing so. Afterwards, your companion takes you home for a drowsy, pleasant write-off of an afternoon. By the next morning, you're back to normal — often with weeks' worth of dentistry behind you.

Certified, Screened, Monitored

Moderate sedation is regulated for good reason, and we treat the safety side with the seriousness it deserves:

  • Certified provider — Dr. Grewal earned his Oral Moderate Sedation certificate from the Academy of General Dentistry
  • Thorough screening — your medical history, medications and airway are reviewed in advance; the sedation assessment form starts this from home
  • Continuous monitoring — vitals watched throughout the visit
  • Clear pre- and post-op instructions — written, simple, and reviewed with your escort too

Is Oral Sedation Right for You?

It's the strongest fit for significant dental anxiety or phobia, long appointments (think multiple crowns, extractions or full-mouth phases done in one sitting), powerful gag reflexes, and patients who've simply decided they want to be done with years of postponed care in as few visits as possible. If your anxiety is milder — or you need to drive yourself — nitrous oxide may be the better tool. Many patients use both together.

The consultation is just a conversation. No treatment, no commitment — come tell us what you're up against, and we'll map the calmest possible path through it. Call (613) 491-3300 or book online.

Oral Sedation — Frequently Asked Questions

Will I remember the appointment?

Most patients remember very little — fragments at most. For patients whose anxiety is rooted in vivid memories of past bad experiences, this amnesic effect is often the single most valuable part of oral sedation.

Am I unconscious during oral sedation?

No. Moderate sedation keeps you conscious and able to respond to us — you're profoundly relaxed and drowsy, not anesthetized. It's a significant step deeper than nitrous oxide, but well short of general anesthesia, with a better safety profile to match.

What do I need to arrange for a sedation appointment?

Three things: follow the pre-visit instructions we give you (including eating guidelines and your regular medications), have a responsible adult bring you and take you home, and plan a quiet rest-of-day — no driving, work decisions or important commitments until the next morning.

Is the dentist qualified to provide this?

Yes — Dr. Jaswinder Grewal holds an Oral Moderate Sedation certificate from the Academy of General Dentistry (Toronto, 2015), and sedation visits follow strict protocols for screening, dosing and monitoring throughout your appointment.
