Nitrous Oxide Sedation

The gentlest tool in sedation dentistry — working in seconds, adjustable throughout your visit, and fully cleared from your system before you reach the parking lot.

Relaxation in Twenty Seconds

Nitrous oxide — laughing gas — has been dentistry's trusted calming companion for over a century, and modern delivery has made it better than ever. You breathe a precisely controlled blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a soft mask resting on your nose. Within about 20 seconds it reaches the brain; within 2–3 minutes, a warm sense of ease settles in. The dentist adjusts the level throughout your visit — a little more for the tough part, a little less as you settle — and when treatment ends, five minutes of pure oxygen clears it completely.

Why Patients Love It

  • No hangover. You leave feeling like yourself — many patients go straight back to work.
  • No ride needed. Unlike every other form of sedation, you can drive yourself home.
  • Adjustable in real time. Not a fixed dose you're stuck with — it's tuned to you, minute by minute.
  • Tames the gag reflex. For many patients this alone is life-changing for x-rays and impressions.
  • Kid-friendly. Fast on, fast off, and extremely well studied in children.

Perfect For…

Mild to moderate dental anxiety; longer appointments you'd rather float through; children's visits that need a little help; strong gag reflexes; sensitive patients; and anyone who wants the edge taken off without committing their whole day. For deeper relaxation — significant anxiety or major treatment — oral moderate sedation may fit better, and we'll help you choose.

Try Before You Decide: The 5-Minute Trial

Unsure how it will feel? We offer a short trial — about five minutes on the mask with no treatment at all — so you can experience the sensation and decide with confidence. It's a small thing, but for anxious patients it turns an unknown into a known, and that changes everything.

A Few Honest Caveats

Nitrous isn't for everyone. COPD is a contraindication, and we're cautious with emphysema, chest problems, respiratory difficulties, MS and claustrophobia. That's why every sedation visit starts with a medical history review — safety is the boring, non-negotiable part of comfort. Start yours from home with the sedation assessment form.

Curious whether nitrous could change how the dentist feels for you? Call (613) 491-3300 or book a visit — and ask about the trial.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation — Frequently Asked Questions

What does nitrous oxide feel like?

Most patients describe a warm, floaty calm — some feel light tingling in fingers or toes, and things that would normally bother you simply stop mattering. You stay awake, aware and able to talk the whole time.

Can I drive home after nitrous oxide?

Yes. After treatment we run pure oxygen for about five minutes, which clears the gas completely. Unlike oral sedation, there's no lingering drowsiness and no escort required — you can drive, work, and carry on with your day.

Is laughing gas safe for children?

Very — it's one of the most-used and best-studied tools in pediatric dentistry, and the effect ends within minutes of removing the mask. Our board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Julie Maniate, uses it routinely for anxious kids.

Who shouldn't use nitrous oxide?

Patients with COPD should avoid it, and we take extra care with emphysema, other chest and respiratory conditions, MS, and claustrophobia (the nose mask bothers some people). Tell us your full medical history and we'll confirm whether it's right for you — or suggest an alternative.
