Our Services

Pediatric Dentistry

Specialist-level dental care for infants, children and teens — including anxious kids and children with special healthcare needs — from a board-certified pediatric dentist.

Hospital-Trained Specialist Care, Village Convenience

Pediatric dentistry is one of only a handful of recognized dental specialties in Canada — and having a board-certified pediatric dentist on staff makes Dentistry @ Manotick genuinely unusual among family practices in the Ottawa area. Families from Manotick, Barrhaven, Riverside South and well beyond come to us for the kind of children's care that usually requires a trip to a downtown specialty clinic.

Meet Dr. Julie Maniate, BSc, DMD, FRCD(C)

Dr. Maniate earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of Manitoba, completed a hospital residency at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), and finished her pediatric specialty training at Yale–New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry — a voluntary board certification held by a minority of pediatric dentists — and previously served as Clinical Director of undergraduate pediatric dentistry in Winnipeg, teaching the next generation of dentists how to care for kids.

More importantly, as far as your child is concerned: she's warm, endlessly patient, and passionate about making every dental visit a positive experience.

Who Benefits Most From Specialist Care

  • Infants and toddlers — first assessments (recommended by age one), teething guidance, and early habit counselling
  • Anxious or previously traumatized children — structured behaviour guidance that rebuilds trust visit by visit
  • Children with special healthcare needs — developmental, sensory, medical or physical — with visits designed around your child
  • Children needing extensive treatment — completed efficiently and comfortably, with sedation options when appropriate
  • Complex dental development — early orthodontic concerns, missing or extra teeth, enamel defects and dental trauma follow-up

Working Together With Your Family Dentist

Many of our pediatric patients see Dr. Maniate for specialist needs while the rest of the family sees Dr. Grewal or Dr. Hicks down the hall — one office, one chart, one team. We also gladly accept referrals from other Ottawa-area dental offices; use our referral form and we'll take excellent care of your patient.

Pediatric Dentistry — Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist?

A pediatric dentist completes two to three additional years of hospital-based specialty training after dental school, focused exclusively on children — including infant oral health, behaviour guidance, sedation, dental development and treating children with medical complexities or special needs. Dr. Maniate is also board-certified, the highest credential in the specialty.

Does my child need a referral to see Dr. Maniate?

No referral is required — though we do welcome referrals from other dental offices across Ottawa. You can book directly with our office at (613) 491-3300.

Can Dr. Maniate treat children with special healthcare needs?

Yes. Caring for children with physical, developmental, sensory or medical complexities is a core part of pediatric specialty training. Tell us about your child when you book and we'll plan the visit — timing, environment and approach — around what helps them succeed.

My toddler won't sit still. Is it even worth coming in?

Absolutely — wiggly is normal and expected. Early visits often happen in a parent's lap, take just minutes, and build the familiarity that makes future visits easy. Waiting until a child 'can behave' usually means waiting until something already hurts.
